CHS to close 2 hospitals: 3 things to know

Knoxville, Tenn.-based Tennova Healthcare, part of Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems, will close two Tennessee hospitals this week.

Here are three things to know:

1. Tennova will shut down Physicians Regional Medical Center in Knoxville and Lakeway Regional Hospital in Morristown on Dec. 28.

2. Tennova announced plans in October to close the two facilities.

"We will work with our medical staff, patients and local EMS/first responders to ensure a smooth transition of care," Tony Benton, CEO of Tennova Healthcare in East Tennessee, said in a press release in October. "Strengthening our network and pursuing new outpatient strategies is critical to meet the needs and preferences of today's healthcare consumers and support the way our physician partners prefer to practice."

3. Although Tennova will close two hospitals, it plans to enhance services at its other Tennessee hospitals. The system also said it is pursuing opportunities to develop new outpatient care sites in the state.
