CHS hospitals by state

Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems currently operates 71 hospitals, down from 102 in 2019.

More moves from the for-profit system could come in 2024. CEO Tim Hingtgen said on the system's Feb. 21 earnings call that officials are evaluating interest for sales that could yield more than $1 billion in additional proceeds. CFO Kevin Hammons said on the call that the system anticipates one or more of these transactions could close within the calendar year, "providing substantial capital for the company to redeploy."

The system is also attempting to sell two of its North Carolina hospitals to Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Novant Health, but the Federal Trade Commission is attempting to block the deal. The FTC alleges that Novant's acquisition of the hospitals would "irreversibly consolidate the market for hospital services in the Eastern Lake Norman Area in the northern suburbs of Charlotte."

Here is the breakdown by state of the 71 hospitals CHS operates, according to its website.

  • Indiana: 10
