Wilmington, Del.-based ChristianaCare reported a $17.4 million operating gain (0.5% margin) in fiscal 2026, representing an operating margin of about 0.5%, down from a $35.5 million operating gain (1.1% margin) in fiscal 2025, according to financial documents published Sept. 25.
Seven things to know:
1. ChristianaCare recorded $3.6 billion in operating revenue, up 8.2% from $3.3 billion in fiscal 2025. Net patient service revenue increased 7.9% to $3.39 billion.
2. Operating expenses climbed 8.9% to $3.5 billion from $3.3 billion. Salaries, wages and benefits increased 6.3% to $2.2 billion, while supplies and other expenses rose 13.8% to $1.3 billion.
3. Nonoperating performance strengthened during the year. Investment returns totaled $365.6 million, up from $262.6 million in fiscal 2025. Including nonoperating activity, the system reported $351.7 million in revenue over expenses, compared with $268.5 million a year earlier.
4. ChristianaCare spent $289 million on property and equipment during fiscal 2026, up from $193.4 million in 2025. Construction in progress increased to $230.6 million from $120.2 million. The system also issued $328.3 million in revenue bonds in February to help fund capital projects. Long-term debt, excluding current maturities, increased to $657 million from $319.2 million. ChristianaCare was in compliance with all financial debt covenants as of June 30.
5. The financial statements also reflect ChristianaCare’s July 2025 acquisition of five outpatient centers from Prospect Medical Holdings’ Crozer Health System. The system paid $49.2 million for ambulatory surgery centers and imaging sites in Pennsylvania and recorded $46.1 million in goodwill related to the transaction.
6. The system’s total assets grew to $6.1 billion as of June 30, up from $5.2 billion the year before. Cash and cash equivalents decreased to $547.1 million from $568.2 million, while long-term investments increased to $2.6 billion from $2.4 billion.
7. Net cash provided by operating activities totaled $116.7 million, down from $188.5 million the previous year. ChristianaCare ended the fiscal year with $4.4 billion in total net assets, up from $4 billion.
