Carilion Clinic, Aetna ACO to Offer Four Health Plans

Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, Va., and health insurer Aetna are now offering four health plans for small businesses in its community as part of their new partnership, according to a Carilion news release.

Carilion and Aetna formed a partnership in March to create an accountable care organization. The new health plans, which will go into effect Jan. 1, 2012, are the first products to come out of the relationship, and they will be under the name Aetna Whole Health, according to the release.

The health plans will not only direct patients to Carilion physicians. Aetna also included Carilion competitor LewisGale Regional Health System — based in Salem, Va., and an affiliate of Hospital Corporation of America — to make the plans more attractive to purchase.

According to a Roanoke Times report, Carilion CFO Don Lorton said the goal of the health plans is to manage chronic diseases and to keep people healthier before needing hospital care.
