Residents in the Sonoma Valley Health Care District will vote in March on a measure proposing a $250 annual parcel tax to help fund Sonoma (Calif.) Valley Hospital, the Sonoma Index-Tribune reports.

A parcel tax is a type of property tax that is assessed at a rate based on the characteristics of a parcel as opposed to the assessed property value.

Local residents now pay a $195 annual parcel tax, which raises roughly $3 million each year for Sonoma Valley Hospital. The proposed additional $55 per year would increase the amount collected for the hospital to $3.85 million across the next five years, according to the report.

Proponents of the tax argue for the measure because the hospital is operating at a deficit. The current $195 parcel tax has helped fund the hospital’s emergency department operations, as government reimbursements have declined, according to the report.

The proposition requires a two-thirds majority to pass and will be voted on March 7.
