The MHA totaled figures from 128 hospitals in the state. The report also found that Missouri hospitals incurred $86 million in bad debt in 2010 and absorbed more than $1 billion related to the unpaid costs of treating Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries.
Other findings from the 2010 community benefit report include the following:
• Hospitals donated $35 million to causes in their communities and $30 million toward free or reduced-cost medical clinic services.
• About $274 million was contributed to the education of health professionals.
• Missouri hospitals added roughly 10,000 jobs and recorded capital investments of roughly $1.2 billion.
