California First State to Standardize Health Plan Copays, Deductibles

California has become the first state to release its standards (pdf) for what health insurers can charge in copays and deductibles in order to be classified as bronze, silver, gold or platinum plans outlined in President Obama’s landmark health law.

Bronze plans, intended to have the lowest premiums of the four metals, may charge members up to a $5,000 deductible each year. Silver plan members could pay as much as a $2,000 deductible, and gold and platinum plans may not charge a deductible under the state’s rule. Copays are also reduced as they move up the metal hierarchy.
