BCBS could lose Medicaid contract if Montana instates budget cuts

Montana may terminate its managed care contract with Helena-based Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana if its revenues fall short of projections, according to a Billings Gazette report.

The state’s financial results will be released later this month. A shortfall could enact budget cuts approved by Montana legislators earlier this year if revenues fall more than $12 million under budget, the report states.

Should the contract be terminated, administrative duties for more than 20,000 Medicaid beneficiaries would shift to the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services. The state estimates it would save $4 million during the next two years if the change is enacted.

A transition would not take place until January, the report states. All contracts between providers and BCBSM’s managed care plans would end if the contract does.
