Baystate cuts 98 positions on road to 'long-term financial resilience'

Baystate Health cut 98 corporate positions amid a $225 million transformation to focus on core operations and strategic growth.

The Springfield, Mass.-based health system announced the less than 1% workforce reduction Feb. 4.

"While some of the impacted positions are currently vacant and will no longer be filled, there are individuals leaving Baystate. We recognize these transitions heartfeltly impact our people and their families. We are working to find alternate positions for those whose roles were eliminated, and eligible team members who are not transitioned to other positions in our organization will receive severance pay and other job support, including access to career transition services," the health system said in a statement sent to Becker's.

Baystate will continue to "aggressively" recruit and hire physicians, advanced practice providers and bedside caregivers. This is the system's second workforce reduction in four months; it previously cut 134 leadership roles in mid-November before initiating a $225 million "transformational journey" for core operations improvement.

The health system has also recently optimized its organizational structure to streamline decision-making and become more efficient.

"Our Baystate Health 2030 strategic planning process has been energizing and enabling in our dialogue with governance, leadership, physicians, nurses and team members. In addition to being a clinically driven and physician-led health system, we have the unique opportunity to be the economic and health pillar in New England, preferred destination to work and practice, and establish long-term financial resilience," said the statement.

Baystate aims to remain an independent health system and invest $1.2 billion in operations and growth over the next six years.
