Baptist Health South Florida Reports $25M in Q2 Losses

Miami-based Baptist Health South Florida reported a loss of $24.8 million on operating revenue of $530.2 million in the second quarter, which ended Mar. 31, due to significant loss of investments, according to a report from the South Florida Business Journal.

Baptist Health earned $30.7 million, which was offset by a $49.1 million realized investment loss, according to the report.

Although the healthcare provider succeeded in attracting more patients, Baptist Health provided $63.5 million in charity care (up from $46.5 million in 2008) and booked $81.1 million for doubtful accounts (up from $65.9 million in 2008) in the second quarter, according to the report.

The loss is improved from 2008 when Baptist Health reported a loss of $26.8 million on operating revenues of $470.2 million, according to the report.
