S.C.’s Bamberg County Hospital Lays Off One-Third of Employees as Three-County Consolidation Fails

Bamberg (S.C.) County Hospital has laid off 35 employees — about a third of its workforce — as a plan to create a three-county regional health system failed, according to a State report.

The Bamberg hospital, Barnwell (S.C.) County Hospital and Allendale County Hospital in Fairfax, S.C., planned to join forces to create Tri-County Regional Health Care Park under the management of Healthcare Management Partners. However, Allendale recently pulled out of the plan and HMP decided a two-county system would not be feasible.

Bamberg County Hospital had a net loss of $2.4 million in the nine months ending in May and filed for Chapter 9 bankruptcy in June.
