Average reimbursement rate for small hospitals, by region

Small hospitals — those with less than 100 beds — in the Midwest and Northern Plains are among the nation's small hospitals with the highest average reimbursement rate, according to RelayHealth Financial's Revenue Cycle Index.

For the index, reimbursement rate is defined as the percent of total charges that can be collected, excluding self-pay patients. The data used for the comparison is based on internal McKesson data.

Here are the average reimbursement rates for small hospitals, organized by geographic region, according to the Revenue Cycle Index.  

  • Midwest — 36.98 percent
  • Northern Plains — 35.51 percent
  • Mountain — 32.94 percent
  • Northeast — 32.84 percent
  • Southeast — 31.36 percent
  • Southern Plains — 30.06 percent
  • Pacific — 26.91 percent
  • South Central — 25.34 percent
