Atlanta couple stranded in Mexico over $16K billing dispute returns to US

An Atlanta couple who said they were stuck at a hospital in Mexico due to a billing dispute are back home, according to TV station CBS46.

Tori Austin and her fiancé Stephen Johnson left the U.S. on a Carnival cruise ship about two weeks ago and arrived at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport from Mexico City on Nov. 26, according to the station.

The homecoming took place after American actor, writer, producer, comedian and director Tyler Perry, who also lives in Atlanta, paid $16,000 to cover Mr. Johnson's medical expenses and offered to cover the couple's travel expenses.

Mr. Johnson had been at Centro Médico Americano hospital in Progreso, Mexico. Ms. Austin told NBC News earlier this week that medics on the cruise ship diagnosed Mr. Johnson with pancreatitis, diabetes and a kidney infection, which resulted in her fiancé going to the hospital.

The couple said they were stuck at the hospital in Mexico because they were unable to pay the medical bill.

CBS46 reports that Mr. Johnson was taken to a hospital in the Atlanta area once he arrived home.
