Select Specialty Hospital – Tucson East in Arizona will close on or about Aug. 7, according to a WARN notice filed July 9. All 99 affected employees will be permanently laid off as a result.
The facility is a 28-bed critical illness recovery hospital located on the Tucson Medical Center campus.
The largest cuts fall on clinical staff, including 24 registered nurses, 18 patient care technicians and 18 respiratory therapists, according to the filing. The hospital’s CEO, chief nursing officer and directors of pharmacy, case management and quality management are also among those being laid off.
Mechanicsburg, Pa.-based Select Medical was acquired for $3.9 billion by a consortium led by its co-founder and executive chairman Robert Ortenzio, the organization said in late June, becoming a privately held company.
As of March 31, Select operated 103 critical illness recovery hospitals in 28 states; 41 rehabilitation hospitals in 15 states; and 1,912 outpatient rehabilitation clinics in 37 states and Washington, D.C.
