Are RACs Performing Enough Provider Outreach?

Recovery audit contractors have been around the healthcare landscape for a while, but a recent blog post by J. Paul Spencer on The RAConteur looked to see if RACs are performing enough “provider outreach sessions.”

According to the RAC statement of work, RACs must perform provider outreach to “notify provider communities of the recovery auditor’s purpose and direction,” according to the post.

Mr. Spencer found that CGI, the RAC for Region B, has not conducted a provider outreach session since March 24. HDI, the RAC for Region D, has not conducted a provider outreach session since Sept. 2009, according to the post.

He concluded the post by saying hospitals are familiar with the RAC program, but there are several physician groups that may not be as familiar with it. He suggested that the provider community request CMS and its RACs to provide more outreach sessions to ensure a more thorough knowledge of RAC compliance.
