Another rural New York hospital to close campus, affecting 201 jobs

Brooks-TLC Hospital System plans to close its TLC Lakeshore Health Center Campus in Irving, N.Y., in January, according to Buffalo Business First.

The closure of the hospital campus will affect all services, including outpatient and support services, a 20-bed inpatient behavioral health hospital and 20-bed addictions facility. The campus is expected to close Jan. 1, pending patient transfers.

The closure will affect 141 full-time employees and 60 part-time staff members. Hospital officials said that employees can apply for open positions within the health system.

Brooks-TLC Hospital System said the decision to close the campus is a result of the financial challenges of being a rural health provider. In 2019, the system reported a $7.1 million deficit.

“This is a time of great change for rural health providers. Reimbursement and market forces have made it difficult, and in some cases impossible, for rural providers to remain open,” said Mary LaRowe, president and CEO at Brooks-TLC Hospital System. “Certainly Brooks-TLC Hospital System is not immune to those challenges.”

This is the second rural New York hospital to announce plans to close its campus in recent months. In August, Eastern Niagara Hospital announced plans to close its campus in Newfane, N.Y. It shuttered Nov. 29.
