Montgomery, Ala.-based Jackson Hospital has delayed plans to close by July 1 amid ongoing discussions with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama, city, county and state leaders to keep the facility open.
“Nothing changes operationally today,” John Quinlivan, president and CEO of Jackson Hospital, said in a June 29 news release shared with Becker’s. “Jackson Hospital remains open, our emergency department remains open and our teams continue to care for patients.”
Jackson Hospital sought bankruptcy protection in February 2025 and has been in ongoing discussions with BCBS Alabama amid reimbursement disputes.
Mr. Quinlivan told Becker’s June 25 that he couldn’t say which way the discussions would go, but the hospital remained “hopeful” for a resolution. The hospital’s board met June 26 to evaluate final offers from BCBS Alabama ahead of a potential closure, but has extended discussions.
While Jackson Hospital is encouraged by engagement from partners, “important pieces” must be finalized to ensure its viability, Mr. Quinlivan said.
“Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama wants Jackson Hospital to remain open and continue providing care to patients,” BCBS said in a June 29 statement shared with Becker’s. “We continue to work with State and local officials and are in discussions with Jackson Hospital to find a solution that meets the needs of our customers and the River Region community.”
