Here are eight statistics on hospital discharges by payor, based on data from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project Nationwide Inpatient Sample in 2010. The project is part of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and is based on data collected from 5,134 hospitals.

Medicare
Total hospital discharges: 14.54 million
Percent total: 37.3 percent

Private
Total hospital discharges: 12.45 million
Percent total: 31.9 percent

Medicaid
Total hospital discharges: 8.27 million
Percent total: 21.2 percent

Uninsured

Total hospital discharges: 2.34 million
Percent total: 6 percent
