Illinois Medicaid Director Fears Too Few Physicians for State’s Newly Insured

When an estimated 1.2 million uninsured Illinois residents gain health coverage next year — half through the state’s expanded Medicaid program, the others through the online exchanges — there may not be enough physicians to take care of them, fears Illinois Department of Health and Family Services Director Julie Hamos, according to a report by Crain’s Chicago Business.

Some experts have called for as many as 7,000 more primary care physicians to meet the demand of 29 million newly insured Americans. Of Illinois’ current 47,000 physicians, about 16 percent don’t accept Medicaid patients, which involves lower reimbursement rates, according to the report.
