After receiving permission from federal regulators, New York will move forward with revamping its healthcare delivery system, according to a Crain’s New York Business report.

Goals of the state’s overhauled reform process, called the Delivery System Reform Incentive Payment program, include cutting unnecessary hospital admissions for Medicaid by 25 percent and encouraging hospitals to collaborate to decide which institutions need to slim down.

To incentivize hospitals and health systems to collaborate and embrace the reform process, $6.4 billion in federal Medicaid funds will be made available to those who meet the DSRIP performance targets.

The $6.4 billion is the largest amount of healthcare funding to ever be made available as a lump sum, according to the report.

A 250-page application for teams of healthcare groups to apply for a chunk of the funds has been made available by the state this week and will be due in December, giving interested systems nearly three months to apply.
