The first is with Portland, Maine-based Mercy Health System. That initiative includes 40 participating physicians and 4,300 people covered under a Cigna health plan.
Cigna has also formed an accountable care partnership with Columbus, Ohio-based Mount Carmel Health Partners, part of Mount Carmel Health System. That accountable care agreement includes 67 physicians collaborating to care for 3,100 individuals covered by Cigna.
Cigna is part of more than 30 accountable care initiatives — its version of accountable care organizations — in 16 states nationwide; the insurer hopes to have 100 ACO-like arrangements in place by the end of 2014.
