5 notes on CPT code changes in 2020

The American Medical Association released updates to its Current Procedural Terminology code set for 2020.

Five changes to know:

1. AMA released 394 code changes, including 248 new codes, 71 deletions and 75 revisions. The changes will take effect Jan. 1, 2020.

2. Among the changes, AMA added CPT codes for medical services administered through digital communication tools like patient portals. Specifically, CPT added six new codes to report e-visits.

3. AMA also added CPT codes to report self-measured blood pressure monitoring. AMA made the change in an effort to expand reporting for physicians whose patients have variable access to care.

4. Additionally, CPT added new codes for health and behavior assessment and intervention services. The new codes replace six codes to better record interdisciplinary care coordination.

5. CPT also enhanced the codes for reporting long-term electroencephalographic monitoring services by deleting four codes and adding 23 new codes.
