Here are four things to know.
1. Outgoing Democratic Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe and Democratic lawmakers have made various unsuccessful efforts to expand Medicaid.
2. Mr. McAuliffe will be succeeded this month by Democrat Ralph Northam, who during his campaign for governor said he would prioritize expanding Medicaid, according to the report.
3. Republicans currently have a majority in the state Senate and the state House of Delegates. Republicans currently have a 51-49 majority in the House and a 21-19 majority in the Senate, according to Politico.
4. Given the GOP majority in both chambers, Democrats will need to garner enough Republican support to push Medicaid expansion through, and will need to determine how Virginia will fund expansion, Politico reports.
