U.S. Hospitals Generate $2.3 Trillion in Economic Activity

A new report from the American Hospital Association (pdf) shows that in 2011, U.S. hospitals and health systems supported more than $2.3 trillion in economic activity, a contribution the lobbying group said is “often overlooked.”

Hospitals in California ($178.9 billion), New York ($120.7 billion) and Texas ($106.3 billion) provided the most in economic impact, which included hospital payroll/benefits, hospital expenditures and other factors.

The AHA’s report also said hospitals directly employ 5.5 million people, making them the second-largest source of private-sector jobs.
