4 notable donations to healthcare organizations

Several healthcare organizations recently received donations to fund research, advance treatments, improve patient care and start renovations.

Here are four notable donations, pledges or bequests given to healthcare organizations by various entities reported by Becker's Hospital Review or other news outlets in the last three weeks:

1. UC San Diego received a $25 million donation from the Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Family Foundation. The money will help establish a school of public health at the university. Currently, UC San Diego has bachelor's and master's degree programs in public health but no building to house the programs.

2. Children's Hospital of Los Angeles received a $10 million donation from Ryan Murphy,  creator of the television series "American Horror Story." The donation was to thank staffers who treated his 4-year-old son, Ford, who had cancer.

3. Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minn.) will use a $10 million donation from the Louis Gerstner Jr. Fund at Vanguard Charitable to support five health system initiatives. The money will be used to advance research into augmented human intelligence in cardiovascular care as well as regenerative medicine for spine care. In addition, the grant will support ongoing educational opportunities for nurse practitioners and physician assistants.

4. University of Maryland Medical Center (Baltimore) received the largest donation in its history — a $25 million gift from Baltimore auto dealer Len Stoler and his wife, Roslyn. The donation will help fund a new cancer building.
