Dr. Stone gave a case example of a hospital that had a physician alignment strategy reduce quality due to poor communication and inattention to cultural factors, among other reasons. In contrast, he gave examples from Sanford Health, based in Sioux Falls, S.D., and Fargo, N.D., which has improved quality through its fully integrated model. Dr. Stone shared some tips to develop alignment strategies that positively affect quality:
• Quality trumps strategy. “Strategy often trumps everything else, and it should be the reverse,” Dr. Stone said.
• Seek the opinion of the man in the trenches and then listen.
• Pay attention to the details.
• Have two backup strategy plans
• Aim for complete integration with aligned incentives
