25% of patients likely to get unsolicited cost estimate from healthcare provider

On average, approximately 25 percent of patients say they did not have to ask their healthcare providers for a cost estimate but received it unsolicited before receiving healthcare services, according to a TransUnion survey.

TransUnion surveyed 7,407 household decision-makers who have health insurance across all 50 states and Washington, D.C.

Respondents in Utah were most likely at 39 percent to respond “true” to the statement, “My provider gave me a cost estimate before I received healthcare services without me asking.”

Respondents in the following states were the most likely to have been given cost estimates from their providers, without asking, before receiving healthcare services:

  1. Utah — 39 percent (of those surveyed responded “true”)
  2. Montana — 38 percent
  3. Vermont — 37 percent
  4. North Carolina — 35 percent
  5. Oklahoma — 35 percent
