20 Statistics on Medicare Cost Growth at Hospitals

Hospitals’ Medicare cost growth had risen sharply between 2002 and 2008, but the financial challenges that bubbled afterward have led to slower cost growth as of late for both inpatient and outpatient cases.

According to the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission, slow price inflation has also contributed to lower hospital cost growth in the past three years.

Here are 20 statistics from MedPAC’s annual report on Medicare hospital cost growth between 2007 and 2011. Note: MedPAC did not adjust figures for reported changes in case mix.

Inpatient cost growth per admission
2007: 4.3 percent
2008: 5.5 percent
2009: 2.9 percent
2010: 2.0 percent
2011: 2.8 percent

Outpatient cost growth per service
2007: 5.6 percent
2008: 5.1 percent
2009: 4.8 percent
2010: 0.1 percent*
2011: 2.7 percent
*Outpatient cost growth in 2010 was 1.7 percent if MedPAC adjusted for the complexity of services provided.
