Fountain Valley Calif.-based MemorialCare laid off 58 employees on June 16 at its Long Beach (Calif.) Medical Center and Long Beach-based Miller Children’s and Women’s Hospital, according to a WARN notice.
“Earlier this week, the hospitals implemented changes resulting in the elimination of 58 positions and the reclassification of three from full-time to part-time roles,” a spokesperson for MemorialCare said in a June 18 statement shared with Becker’s. “While difficult, these types of adjustments are necessary to ensure that the hospitals remain sustainable and can continue to provide exceptional patient care for years to come.”
Affected roles include administrative functions, nonclinical positions, interpreter services and respiratory care. The spokesperson also pointed to the “ever-evolving and challenging landscape of healthcare delivery” for some of the workflow and operational changes at the hospitals.
Patient care will not be affected at Long Beach Medical Center and Miller Children’s and Women’s Hospital, the statement added.
The news comes after MemorialCare shared plans in early May to lay off 115 positions by July 1 at both hospitals due to operational and workflow changes. Affected employees included technicians, nurses and other administrative and clinical roles.
