As of September 2011, WellPoint had enrolled 34.355 million people in medical plans, whereas UnitedHealthcare enrolled 34.395 million — a difference of about 40,000 members. WellPoint gained 920,000 new enrollees from September 2010 to September 2011. UnitedHealthcare reported total enrollment gains year-over-year of 1.650 million new enrollees.
MFA found that aggregate medical membership for the top seven health plans in the country increased to 128.3 million as of September 2011, up from 125.6 million a year ago.
Commercial, Medicare and Medicaid segments also saw enrollment growth year-over-year, with commercial segment business growing by 1.4 percent from September 2010 to September 2011, and Medicare and Medicaid segments growing by 5.6 percent and 9.4 percent, respectively.
