A $75,000 donation from Covenant Presbyterian Church in Austin, Texas, has helped erase $14 million in medical debt for 10,865 residents through a partnership with nonprofit Undue Medical Debt, The Austin American-Statesman reported Oct. 9.

The church used part of a $200,000 budget surplus to fund the relief, targeting residents in an area of Travis County with significant financial need, according to the report. Recipients are being notified by mail the week of Oct. 9 and do not need to take any action to receive the relief.

Undue Medical Debt works with healthcare providers and debt collectors to acquire outstanding medical bills at discounted rates and eliminate the balances. Its relief program covers people earning no more than four times the federal poverty level, as well as those whose medical debt accounts for at least 5% of their annual income.

This is the church’s second partnership with the nonprofit. In 2020, Covenant Presbyterian donated $100,000 to eliminate $16 million in medical debt across Central Texas, the Statesman reported.

The latest relief adds to a growing list of similar efforts in 2026, including initiatives in Kentucky and Kansas announced in September and October, respectively. Earlier in 2026, partnerships involving four states and an Indiana health system erased more than $1.1 billion in medical debt.
