10 states where most hospitals face Medicare readmission penalties

CMS is penalizing the majority of the nations’ hospitals — 2,592 hospitals — for excess 30-day readmissions by shaving off a portion of their Medicare reimbursements. In the fourth year of the Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program, created under the Affordable Care Act, the hospitals subject to penalties will lose a combined $420 million, according to Kaiser Health News.

Each penalized hospital will see their Medicare payments cut anywhere between 0.01 percent to 3 percent. While nearly all states contain hospitals subject to penalties, some states have notably higher proportions.

The following 9 states and Washington, D.C., have the highest percentage of hospitals subject to penalties.

1. New Jersey — 97 percent of the state’s hospitals will see Medicare payment cuts.

2. Connecticut — 90 percent

3. Florida — 81 percent

4. Virginia — 80 percent

5. Alabama — 79 percent

6. Massachusetts — 78 percent

7. District of Columbia — 78 percent

8. New York — 77 percent

9. South Carolina — 75 percent

10. Rhode Island — 75 percent
