From reimbursement landscape challenges to dwindling patient volumes, many factors lead hospitals to close.
Here are 10 hospitals that have closed since Jan. 1, beginning with the most recent.
1. Copper Basin Medical Center, a critical access hospital in Copperhill, Tenn., closed Oct. 1. The hospital launched a GoFundMe page earlier this year to help stay afloat, but the facility closed after falling 94 percent short of its $100,000 goal.
2. Pioneer Community Hospital of Patrick in Stuart, Va., shut down in phases. The facility closed its emergency department Sept. 13 and began diverting ambulances to other facilities. The hospital continued to provide care to acute care patients until they were stable for discharge or transfer. The hospital offered outpatient care until Sept. 15, when it ceased all services.
3. East Texas Medical Center-Trinity closed in late July, which resulted in 60 employees being laid off. The hospital closed after Tyler-based East Texas Medical Center decided not to renew its lease of the facility.
4. Roseville, Calif.-based Adventist Health on July 24 closed Walla Walla (Wash.) General Hospital along with its affiliated home health division and medical group. Adventist said Walla Walla General has faced financial troubles for the past decade.
5. Timberlands Hospital in Crockett, Texas, closed June 30 after Rockdale, Texas-based Little River Healthcare ended its affiliation agreement with the hospital, according to KTRE.
6. Omaha, Neb.-based CHI Health closed CHI Health Creighton University Medical Centerin Omaha on June 9. At the same time, CHI Health opened a new 20-bed emergency department less than a mile away at Creighton University Medical Center University Campus. The shuttered hospital's Level I trauma center moved about 6 miles to CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center Bergan Mercy in Omaha. CUMC Bergan Mercy is also now the teaching facility for Creighton University's medical school.
7. Walnut Hill Medical Center, a 100-bed for-profit hospital in Dallas, abruptly closed June 4 and filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy just four days later.
8. Davie Medical Center-Mocksville (N.C.) closed at the end of March, according to Journal West. A replacement facility, 50-bed Davie Medical Center, was built in nearby Bermuda Run, N.C.
9. Louisiana Heart Hospital in Lacombe, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January, closed Feb. 10.
10. Gardens Regional Hospital and Medical Center, a 137-bed hospital in Hawaiian Gardens, Calif., closed Feb. 1. The hospital, which served mostly low-income patients and was part of Los Angels County's safety net, faced financial troubles for years and filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2016.
