10.75M more people enrolled in Medicaid or CHIP

From October 2013, when the initial marketplace open enrollment period began for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, to December 2014, more than 10.75 million additional people enrolled in Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program, according to CMS.

The enrollment in the programs in Decemeber 2014 represents an 18.6 percent increase over the average monthly enrollment for July through September of 2013. Connecticut and Maine are not included in the number.

Among states that had expanded Medicaid and were covering newly eligible adults in December 2014, Medicaid and CHIP enrollment rose by more than 27 percent compared to July through September 2013, while states that have not, to date, expanded Medicaid reported an increase of over 7 percent over the same period, according to CMS.

Furthermore, 15 of the 26 states that had expanded Medicaid and were covering newly eligible adults in December 2014, and that reported relevant data for both December 2014 and July through September 2013 baseline period, experienced an enrollment increase of 30 percent or more, according to CMS.

Currently, 28 states plus Washington, D.C. have expanded Medicaid under the PPACA.
