UPMC to build $200M cancer research center after a 6-year delay

After a six-year delay, Pittsburgh-based UPMC is planning to transform a historic building into a new cancer research center with a $200 million investment, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

The new center, which will be housed in a 350,000-square-foot building, will be located near Pittsburgh-based UPMC Shadyside Hospital.

According to the report, the research center will include a business incubator where scientists and entrepreneurs can work to commercialize research. The complex will also eventually include a several-story building nearby.

In 2006 UPMC purchased the historic building, a former Ford Motors assembly line, for $10 million. In 2011, UPMC announced plans to transform the building into a research facility scheduled for completion in 2014; however, the project had languished, until this year.

The new research center is UPMC's latest project announced during its biggest expansion phase since forming in 1990.
