UHS, George Washington U to construct hospital

District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser and George Washington University Hospital signed a letter of intent to build a new acute care hospital in the District, the Washington, D.C.-based hospital announced Aug. 10.

Here are four things to know:

1. The District and GWUH, which is owned and operated through a partnership between George Washington University and King of Prussia, Pa.-based Universal Health Services, will work together to construct a 100 to 125-bed hospital. Officials expect to open the facility in 2023.

2. The hospital will be managed and operated by GWUH and fully integrated into the GW Hospital system. The facility will house a number of healthcare services, including acute care, low-risk obstetrics, urgent care and outpatient surgery.

3. The partnership represents the first public-private healthcare alliance between the District and an organization. The District has allocated a budget of more than $300 million for the construction of the hospital, while GW Hospital will invest more than $75 million over a 10-year period.

4. Through the partnership, the organizations will enter into an exclusive negotiation period to draft a formal affiliation agreement, to be submitted to the council of the District of Columbia.
