Philadelphia-based Penn Medicine has received a $50 million gift that will establish the Middleman Center at Penn Medicine and launch a new fund.
The Middleman Fund is designed to support scientific discoveries at Penn Medicine, including early-stage research in cancer, autoimmune diseases and infectious diseases, according to a Sept. 10 health system news release.
The donation is from Stanley Middleman, founder and CEO of Freedom Mortgage, which is one of the largest mortgage lenders in the country. A health system spokesperson confirmed the gift amount to Becker’s.
The building, which will now be known as the Middleman Center, began in 2018 as an eight-story office tower. It was later expanded with seven additional floors, adding a 217,000-square-foot wet lab, office and research facility atop the original 250,000-square-foot tower.
The Middleman Center will bring together research programs and technologies, including the Colton Center for Autoimmunity at Penn, the High-Throughput Institute for Discovery and the Holman Lab, a biosafety level 3 facility.
“In today’s world of science and medicine, progress comes when researchers have the support to ask important questions and the time and resources to follow them wherever they lead,” University of Pennsylvania Health System CEO Kevin Mahoney said in the release. “This gift will help sustain that progress at the cutting edge of medicine, build on emerging findings, and create new paths for exploration across a broad range of diseases and disciplines.”
