Scripps unveils $33M ED at Scripps Memorial Hospital

The new $33 million emergency department at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, Calif., is six-times larger than the old ED by square footage, holds twice as many beds and can accommodate four times as many trauma patients, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The 33,000-square-foot ED, called the Barbey Family Emergency and TraumaCenter, is located on the first floor of the recently opened Prebys Cardiovascular Institute, which neighbors Scripps Memorial's main tower, according to the report.

The facility includes 51 beds and four ambulance bays, though it can be expanded to eight bays in the event of a catastrophe. It houses four psychiatric beds, four isolation rooms for infectious diseases and upgraded imaging technology, according to the Times of San Diego.

The Barbey family, who founded what is now the VF Corp. apparel company, donated funds to finance the project. Another major gift was provided by the San Diego-based David Whitmire Hearst Jr. Foundation, according to the report, to name the trauma area after Brent Eastman, MD, a former Scripps CMO and trauma surgeon.

The ED will begin operating Monday.
