Riverside Walter Reed Hospital breaks ground on $44.5M expansion

A groundbreaking ceremony took place Feb. 17 on a $44.5 million expansion and renovation project at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital in Gloucester, Va., according to the Gloucester-Mathews Gazette-Journal.

The project includes several phases, some of which have recently been completed. A major component is the construction of a 65,000-square-foot surgical center that will house all surgical services, pre- and post-operative recovery areas and 36 private patient rooms. The new facility is expected to open in July 2018, according to the report.

Another phase of the project includes expanding the emergency department from 6,300 square feet to 16,000 square feet, according to the report.

In the future, the hospital plans to build a new suite for Riverside’s orthopedic practices, expand the Middle Peninsula Cancer Center and additional campus parking, according to the report.
