The hospital, along with Baltimore-based University of Maryland Medical System, celebrated the opening with a ribbon cutting Monday.

The $9 million center is located in downtown Elkton, and is a result of the ongoing partnership between Union Hospital and the University of Maryland Medical System, according to the report. It will offer oncology radiology treatments, among other services.

William Regine, MD, chairman of the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s radiation oncology department and executive director of the Maryland Proton Treatment Center, said in the report that the new center represents hope for local residents, as about half of the center’s patients previously needed certain treatments and technology that took them out of Cecil County.
