Mary Free Bed holds grand re-opening

Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital celebrated the completion of a new $42 million facility during a grand re-opening ceremony Thursday, according to MLive.

The new six-story building houses the hospital's wheelchair and adaptive sports department, the recreational therapy unit, a pediatric inpatient unit with private rooms and other areas for specialized therapies, according to Wood TV.

The new facility is named the Bernedine Keller and Barbara Hoffius Center in honor of two long-time Mary Free Bed administrators.

The expansion increases the hospital's bed count to 167 and boosts Mary Free Bed from the 39th largest independent rehabilitation hospital in the country to the fifth largest, according to Kent Riddle, president of Mary Free Bed.

The new facility represents the second phase of the hospital's total $66 million expansion project. The final phase involves renovating the facility's conference center and catering kitchen, among other updates.
