Lowell General Hospital's ICU expansion nears completion: 5 things to know

Lowell (Mass.) General Hospital is undergoing a $10 million expansion of its intensive care unit, according to the Lowell Sun.

Here are five things to know about the project.

1. The project will expand the ICU from 12 beds to 23, renovating existing emergency room space for the new unit.

2. Once complete, the new ICU will be 12,000 square feet and contain a 3,000-square-foot outbound corridor, which will allow family members to visit patients without passing through the unit, according to the report.

3. Every room in the ICU will be equipped to provide dialysis services. In addition, two rooms will be negative pressure rooms.

4. The project will also add a 5,500-square-foot healing garden next to the ICU.

5. The project is slated for completion in early 2017.
