Lee County to build $50M hospital over golf course

Georgia's Lee County is slated to build a $50 million hospital over half of its Grand Island 18-hole golf course, the Albany Herald reported.

The proposed 50-bed hospital will be subleased to a currently undetermined medical services operator upon completion.

The project will be financed through Lee County Development Authority-issued bonds, according to the Albany Herald. Lee County will also apply for a Georgia Department of Public Health Certificate of Need, which is provided to counties lacking a hospital in its boundaries. The application process will continue through 2016.

The county intends to turn the remaining nine holes of the golf course into space for other recreational activities. Some who own property near the golf course threatened to take legal action against the county.

The Grand Island course will operate until construction begins in February or March 2017.
