DC budgets $300M for United Medical Center replacement

The District of Columbia allocated millions of dollars in its proposed fiscal year 2018 budget toward a replacement facility for United Medical Center, reports Washington Business Journal.

The proposed budget, which passed in its first D.C. Council vote last month, includes $300 million in monies to potentially establish a new hospital on the district's St. Elizabeths East campus, according to the report. This would be the East End Medical Center, urgent care center and ambulatory facility.

The $300 million would come from various sources. These sources include $136 million from funding previously set aside for future improvements to District-owned UMC; $100 million available in fiscal year 2023 from the Committee on Transportation and Environment's budget; and $64 million the district council put toward the project cumulatively in 2022 and 2023, according to the report.

The proposed budget is still pending final approval by the district council as well as final approval by the district's mayor, Muriel Bowser.
