Bon Secours Richmond Health System to transform school into nursing college

Bon Secours Richmond (Va.) Health System officials revealed plans Thursday to transform the city-owned WesthamptonSchool into the organization's new Memorial College of Nursing, according to the Richmond BizSense.

The health system has previously intimated it would use the dormant site to house its nursing school, but had not provided any concrete plans until now.

Bon Secours plans to redevelop the site to create a 90,000-square-foot school that will include simulation labs, classrooms, a library, an ambulatory bay area, faculty office space and congregating areas that can accommodate 350 students, according to the report.

The health system said it will not pursue historic tax credits for the project, as the preservation requirements would have restricted it from building enough space to suit its needs, according to the report.

Bon Secours plans to submit its special use permit application to the Richmond Planning Commission in September, according to the report. If its application is approved, plans for the renovation could go before the city council in 2017.
