8 years after purchasing land, Intermountain Healthcare breaks ground on new hospital

Salt Lake City-based Intermountain Healthcare has owned a 70-acre plot of land in Layton City, Utah, since 2008. Now, the health system will begin construction on a new hospital to serve the community's growing population, according to KSL.com.

Intermountain Healthcare has delayed planning and building the Layton City hospital over economic concerns and uncertainty stemming from the Affordable Care Act, according to the report.

The 300,000-square-foot, 43-bed hospital is expected to be open in mid-2018, and a medical office building next door will open in the fall of 2017.

Bob Stevenson, mayor of LaytonCity, said the hospital is important to the development of the city as the population of DavisCounty continues to grow. The city's only other hospital is IASISHealthcare-ownedDavisHospital and MedicalCenter.

The new facility will provide surgical services, a special care nursery, labor and delivery, a gastrointestinal laboratory, inpatient care, emergency department, imaging services, physical therapy and rehabilitation services, retail pharmacy, infusion services and physicians offices. It will also include outpatient and follow-up services for Salt Lake City-based Primary Children's Hospital, according to the report.
