5 things to know about NASH's new travel surgery practice

The North American Specialty Hospital, based in Denver, launched a travel surgery practice, offering pre-and post-surgical care in the U.S. and surgery in Mexico.

Here are five things to know.

1. The travel surgery practice is equipped with U.S. clinical protocols, U.S. performance-based quality metrics, U.S. surgeon continuous engagement, U.S. malpractice insurance coverage, U.S. accreditation and an attached U.S. hotel, according to a news release.

2. NASH's Cancun, Mexico location is equipped with two operating rooms as well as an entire patient recovery floor within the recently expanded Cancun-based Galenia Hospital, the release states. The hospital has triple accreditation — both Canadian and Mexican authorities and the U.S. Joint Commission International.

3. The new Sheraton Four Points Hotel is directly attached to Galenia Hospital.

4. "Continuity-of-care is a hallmark of NASH's service model, with U.S. surgeons involved by design in every step of the surgical process," NASH CEO Jim Polsfut said in the release. "Pre- and post-operative care are provided in the U.S. where employees are based, and surgery is performed on a rotational basis in Cancun in collaboration with NASH's local medical personnel."

5. NASH launched its medical services in October 2016, with an initial caseload concentrating on orthopedic procedures, including total knee and total hip replacements, the release states. The hospital said it plans to expand into other medical specialties in the future.
