13 hospitals planning facility upgrades, expansions

The following hospitals announced or completed plans in the last week to expand, upgrade or renovate their facilities.

1. Illinois OKs SwedishAmerican's proposed 10-bed NICU

The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board granted SwedishAmerican Hospital a certificate of exemption to build a $2.8 million, 10-bed neonatal intensive care unit at its facility in Rockford, Ill., according to the Rockford Register Star.

2. Expansion at Hartford Hospital will enhance staff training to handle mass casualties
Hartford (Conn.) Healthcare plans to nearly double the size of its Center for Education Simulation and Innovation at Hartford Hospital as part of an effort to expand medical training to handle mass casualties, according to WTNH.com.

3. Swedish Covenant Hospital completes phase 1 of 4 in ED renovation
Chicago-based Swedish Covenant Hospital completed the renovation of some patient and staff areas in a multi-phase emergency department renovation.

4. Construction underway on South Lake Hospital freestanding ED
South Lake Hospital in Clermont, Fla., broke ground earlier this month on a $13 million freestanding emergency department at the intersection of Lake, Orange, Osceola and Polk Counties, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

5. MedStar Georgetown University Hospital to build $567M surgical pavilion by 2021
Washington, D.C.-based MedStar Georgetown University Hospital last week received approval from D.C.'s Zoning Commission to go ahead with its planned $567 million surgical pavilion, according to the Washington Business Journal.

6. Benefis seeks donations to help fund $12.5M ED
Great Falls, Mont.-based Benefis Health System started construction June 12 on a $12.5 million emergency department expansion, according to a local news report from ABC-Fox affiliate KFBB. However, the health system is still fundraising for the effort.

7. Aventura Hospital and Medical Center seeks approval to add beds, parking
Aventura (Fla.) Hospital and Medical Center is seeking city approval for a major expansion project, including the addition of 60 patient rooms and a 506-space parking garage, according to the South Florida Business Journal

8. TriHealth injects $100M into cancer care
Cincinnati, Ohio-based TriHealth will invest $100 million into its cancer care delivery, including a new $62 million clinical building at its Bethesda North Hospital in Cincinnati, according to Cincinnati.com.

9. Beebe Healthcare to embark on $180M expansion
Lewes, Del.-based Beebe Healthcare will go ahead with plans for a comprehensive expansion of the health system over the next several years following approval June 7 from the board of directors.

10. Ochsner eyes Baton Rouge community with $100M expansion project
New Orleans-based Ochsner Health System is expanding in the Baton Rouge, La., region as the system grows its outpatient care services.

11. UChicago Medicine to open the South Side's only Level 1 trauma center May 2018
University of Chicago Medicine will open its Level 1 adult trauma center May 1, 2018, reports Crain's Chicago Business.

12. Florida's Calhoun Liberty Hospital gets $1M from state for ER expansion
Blountstown, Fla.-based Calhoun Liberty Hospital will receive $1 million from the Florida Health Department to fund an emergency room expansion, reports WFSU News.

13. Norton Healthcare to build $38M cancer center
Louisville, Ky.-based Norton Healthcare unveiled plans to build a $38 million comprehensive cancer center across from the Norton Brownsboro Hospital in Louisville, according to Louisville Business First.
