Why the former Allscripts is banking on AI

The company formerly known as Allscripts plans to turn its fortunes around by using generative artificial intelligence to find insights in its decades' worth of patient data, Forbes reported April 18.

Veradigm, the EHR vendor's new name since 2023, acquired healthcare AI startup ScienceIO in March for $140 million, in the wake of being delisted by Nasdaq and an audit for a $20 million revenue overstatement.

Veradigm intends to employ ScienceIO's technology to clean up its 200 million patient records and 5 billion clinician notes, mostly from independent physician offices, and then sell the deidentified data to pharma companies to learn how patients react to drugs outside of clinical trials, according to Forbes.

"We moved quickly because we knew that there was going to come a day where we would have generative AI all around us," Veradigm interim CEO Yin Ho, MD, told the publication. "And we would have no control over how to use those tools."

Unlike most other EHR companies, including Epic, Veradigm owns the rights to its patient data, the news outlet reported.
