Medical records on lockdown after Kansas hospital closure: Report

Patients are having difficulty accessing medical records from Herington (Kan.) Hospital, a 25-bed critical access hospital that closed Oct. 9, local news outlet KWCH reported Oct. 26.

The governor's office is unable to assist patients in accessing their records, as Herington Hospital was not affiliated with the state. Emprise Bank is currently in the process of foreclosing the property.

The hospital, which had been providing services to Herington since 1919, closed due to financial troubles.

"News reports indicated that Herington Hospital was making medical records available to patients," Emprise told KWCH. "Emprise has no knowledge as to whether that occurred or any other actions Herington Hospital might have taken with respect to patient medical records. To the extent any medical records become accessible to Emprise, Emprise will work with all appropriate parties to maintain the confidentiality of the records."
